PowerBook 1400 memory

Memory is a little confusing with the Powerbook 1400. The machine shipped with either 12 MB or 16 MB of RAM.
A "third Party" memory expansion slot will support two "stackable" RAM modules for a total amount of 64 MB of RAM (a 32MB or a 48MB cannot be paired with any other module). NOTE: If a Newer VIEWpowr 16-bit Video-out card is in use, the second "stackable" RAM slot is no longer available; thus, a user should consider purchasing a 48 MB RAM module. Did you get all that? We cannot detail all the options, for more information, download Guru, the memory guide from NewerRam. We have a 1400 and love it. Customers have begged Barbara for her G3 upgrade for most of the last year only to find their plea falling on deaf ears. She loves the machine, it's wonderful. But when Apple first shipped the 1400, it was a dog at any speed of 603e. But times change. The G3 upgrades from Newer and Vimage restored lost vigor to the old beast. Right up until they discontinued them. |
Now Sonnet has announced the G3 333/167/512k upgrade which will ship in February. We are going to dump our old slow 233Mhz processor and install the 333MHz just as soon as we can steal one from Sonnet. If you are upgrading the processor, take the memory right up to 64MB. Memory costs 25 percent of what it did three years ago, so if you can afford the G3 333MHz, you can afford to go for the maximum memory. Do not under any circumstances upgrade your machine to OS 9. It's still buggy and it's a memory hog. A typical 9.0 system will use 46-48MB of memory and when you only start with 64MB, you don't have much left to use. But anything up to 9.0 is just fine. Most 1400 owners will need either a 24MB module or a 48MB module. If you have to, open up your machine to see exactly what configuration you have. Some people may have non-Newer 24MB modules that may not take a piggy back. |
