November 5, 1999 - G4 upgrades in stock

At MacCPU we met the earlier-than-expected release of these much talked about upgrades with mixed emotions. Steve Jobs preannounced the G4 on August 31st and by doing so has caused Apple a world of hurt. The chip and the machines aren't really ready for prime time just yet. But our customers make their own decisions about upgrading. And Sonnet and XLR8 have provided the tempting goodies.

  • We have the Sonnet G4 350MHz and 400MHz upgrades for the 7500-9600 on the shelf: $599 and $799 (prices at 12/1/99)
  • And the XLR8 ZIF G4 350MHz and 400MHz for the Beige G3 and B&W machines: $649 and $899

The theory of the G4 and the engineering is simply brilliant. The G4 was designed for multiprocessing and the G3 wasn't. The G4 is better at what we used to call math-coprocessing. Motorola incorporated a feature called AltiVec which enhances the performance of programs which can take advantage of its code.

Adobe has written an AltiVec plug-in for version 5.5, for Photoshop filters. But the rest of the software manufacturers have been caught short. So if you are a heavy Photoshop filter user and have version 5.5, and you are willing to accept all the early-adopter limitations, then you will see the supercomputer performance. If you aren't, you should consider any of the G3 alternatives, they are a better deal for you.

On the other hand there are people who live in Boston who insist on driving Porsches :)
