The NewerTECH 240MHz G3 CPU caddy-less upgrade for the 71/8100 (The caddyless Little Terror) tested by an AudioMedia II user in an 8100/100AV

At a time when more and more audio and music applications run Native on the PowerPC, many users continue to have an extensive investment in NuBus products, the caddyless version of the Little Terror brings the best of both worlds to the audio and music user; the Native apps approach their maximum power and speed capability, and all the old stuff still works as it was designed.

"Funny....a while ago I asked Digi what they'd heard about the card. They said, as far as they knew, nobody has one yet.

My business depends on the functionality of the AudioMedia II and Sample Cell II cards (from Digidesign) in my 8100. Your info makes me confident that things should work OK. The one problem I forsee - is that some of the Digidesign apps I'm running aren't compatible with OS 8 - most particularly MasterList CD, which is the backbone of my business. I get the impression that the Little Terror requires OS 8 or later. As of now I'm running 7.5 from a second internal drive for the Digi stuff, and switch back and forth to OS 8 on the main drive. The latest system that MLCD supports is 7.6.1, as of now.

I also own a new Power Macintosh G3, and had felt like I was walking with a limp as I switched between machines for various tasks. I now use the 8100 primarily for audio and the G3 for graphics and publishing, although one of the reasons I had bought the G3 was to be able to preview Playlists in BIAS Peak 1.6.3 consisting of regions with multiple Premier DSP plugins applied, in order to audition the interaction of the DSPs for mastering purposes.

I can now also do this on the PPC 8100, thanks to the caddyless Little Terror."

tests in my 8100/100AV

Audio applications

All of these tests were performed with the same 8.1 minimal audio system configuration on a 1 min. stereo 44.1 16 bit soundfile.

sonicWORX Studio 1.5 (80MB ram allocation)checked various plugs:

Unity
Mathematic
Spatial
APEM Deverb
MixDown Pitch II
DE-Noising

All functioned at 2 to 4 times faster

Direct input realtime displays in sonicWORX were fine except realtime meters would not read properly.(I've heard this is a software problem and not the card)

Bias PEAK 1.65 (80MB ram allocation)checked various functions:

Onboard effects:

Gain
Rappify
Normalize
Sample Rate convert
Mono to Stereo
Stereo to mono

All fine and 2 to 4 times faster

All the following plugs functioned properly from within Peak and some at 4 times the calculation speed:

SFX Machine-checked many presets. All were smooth and faster
Waves: L1, S1, TrueVerb, C1, Q10
Opcode Vocode
Arboretum RayGun

Cubase VST 3.5.2 (90MB Ram allocation)
Tested the audio cpu performance on a stereo file. Audio to function properly as well as midi.

All the following plugs functioned properly from within Cubase on the Master Effects send:

Ambisone
DeClicker
DeNoiser
H-VST Band Pass
H-VST Band Reject
H-VST Chorus
H-VST Compressor
H-VST EchoTranz*
H-VST Echo
H-VST Flanger
H-VST Hall Reverb
H-VST High Pass
H-VST Low Pass
H-VST Medium Room Reverb
H-VST More Stereo
H-VST Multi Delay
H-VST Noise Gate
H-VST Pan
H-VST Phaser
H-VST Pitch Changer
H-VST Auto Pan

ESpacial!
Fuzz
LMaximizer
Magneto
Medium Room Reverb
Panner
Finalator
RedValve*It
Roomulator
Scopion
VoxCiter
WaveShell-VST (TrueVerb, C1, L1, S1, Q10)
Wizard
WunderVerb

Externalizer

I was able to use 4 effects simultaneously on the Master Effects send with no problems and 50% CPU still available.

DECK 2.6.1
I was able to playback 32 tracks of digital audio. 18 was the max before on a regular 81/110. Screen redraws AMAZINGLY improved during playback and the use of effects was greatly enhanced. Many aspects of DECK are dependent upon drive access times, but many others are CPU dependent. The improvements in the CPU areas were dramatic.

Finale 3.7.2
functioned properly when testing: part extraction, transposition, etc...

Sound Designer 2.8, 2.8.2
functioned properly and with all plugs

Pro Audio analyzer AD-1
functioned properly and smoother

BarbaBatch 2.0.1
functioned properly and faster

MultiRack 2.3 (realtime audio processing) functioned properly, but processing is external hardware dependent so it wasn't faster.

SampleCell Editor
functioned properly

SoundMaker 1.03
functioned properly and faster with all plugs

WaveConvert Pro 2.3
functioned properly and faster with all plugs

TimeBandit 2.52
functioned properly and much faster

MasterList CD 1.4
functioned properly and much faster in basic functions

SpectraFoo Analyzer
DOES NOT appear to operate properly. It requires at least a 603 processor to work and it must not see the card as the main processor.

I've got a bunch of before and after processing times, but they really aren't necessary. The 240MHz/1MB backside card is generally 3 to 4 times faster in applications that have native processing.

and last but not least... Retrospect 4.0 .......wow... now that's fast. Backed up successfully !

The Newer Technology G3 upgrade sits in the PDS slot. We have a backorder list a gazillion feet long for the upgrade for the x100 series that has a pass-thru caddy that allows you to use the exisitng PDS AV or HPV card. But NewerTECH have produced a caddyless G3 CPU upgrade which is PERFECT for you guys whose center NuBus slot is occupied and who can get video from a NuBus video card or the high density motherboard video port.
